How to Create a Cosy, Boho Home Office (Without a Room).

Creating a workspace that doesn’t have its own dedicated room is easier than you think.

It’s amazing how a small corner or an empty bedroom storage space can be transformed into a beautiful home office.

Mine is currently a work in progress but my aim is to create the right balance of personal decor and seamless function. This is a must if it’s going to be a tight space so organisation is key. It also has to be an area where I get excited about returning to it everyday. I need to enjoy being in it to ensure each day will be focussed and productive.

This is where the cosy, boho vibes come into it. Adding the right accessories and those finishing touches to enhance the bohemian look. A place where you actually look forward to working in. A work space that’s full of life, colour and texture.

So, let’s get started on creating your dream home office.

Colour blocking

Starting with a blank canvas...

If you have the opportunity to paint your walls then it’s a super fun way to get creative in styling your space. Start simple with a two tone wall or try out different shapes and patterns if painting and DIY is your thing.

If your office setup is in the same room as another one, a feature wall is a great way to divide it and brighten it up. Particularly if it doesn’t get much natural light.

Check out this board for some colour blocking inspiration.

Find the Perfect Desk

Find a desk that meets your needs, the size, style and storage space for example.

I upcycled an old desk using paint and vinyl and the difference in how it made me feel whilst I worked was incredible! I didn’t want to replace it as it was a great second hand find and the perfect size for the area where I wanted my office to be.

Once you’ve got the desk sorted it’s all about layering up from there.

Desk Accessories

Ahh the fun, styling part!

Whether you prefer stationary to be out as a form of accessorising or hidden away to keep it neat and tidy. This is a simple way to add colour and your own personal touch whilst still being functional.

Adding these finishing touches is crucial to your working mindset. What brings you joy? Photos displayed in a unique way such as hanging them up on a board or within a calendar. Perhaps lots of stationary in a bohemian style as part of your daily journaling routine. Whatever makes you feel good AND has a purpose, add it on. Just try to keep it clutter free.

Here are some of my favourite accessories I use on my desk:

Macrame coasters - my morning coffee routine is not complete without a cosy mat to add texture, style and to protect my desk.

Pots - I love the fact you can use them for both pen/pencil holders as well as houseplant covers. I can't enough of these personalised ceramic pen pots.

Journal & planners - I can’t say no to a pretty planner and to a notebook which I go through quite a few of from daily journaling. The designs are lovely to choose from at Lucy Says I Do and are perfect to have out on display on your desk.

Shelves

When you’re designing a home office in a small area, shelves are a life space saver. Especially how they can be a fun way to decorate above your computer screen.

These handmade shelves are my go to. They come in a variety of finishes as well as sizes which is very handy if you need some extra corner shelf space.

They’re perfect for allowing you to display your  personal possessions whilst adding style and colour to your workspace. As well as doubling up as wall art. Dot a few framed portraits or motivational quotes to help boost your mood. Get creative and have some fun with a little bit of shelfie styling!

Plants

Speaking of mood boosting…

There's nothing better than seeing greenery on all different levels in a home office. One plant is just not enough!

The more plants you have the better. If you’re fortunate enough to have an office area that gets a lot of natural light then fill that space with them. Display them on your desk and shelves. Get a macrame plant hanger and add it onto a ceiling wall hook. Then get a tiered plant hanger and attach to a curtain rod. This is where the good stuff happens.

Not sure which plants to go for? Then check out these blogs to help you choose which one’s to go for that focus on easy to care for plants.

Curtains

A finishing touch to your space you never would have thought to have used.

Not only does it bring in those cosy, boho elements to your office. It also acts as a room divider if it’s in a shared space such as a combined guest room and home office. As well as areas that don’t have a door but need a small amount of privacy without making the space feel small. Keeping it light and airy.

These macrame curtains can be made to size. So if you have chosen an usual space to create your home office in, get in touch and make a custom request. I’ll help create the perfect piece for you.

I hope this has given you inspiration in creating a dreamy boho home office.
